Although mercury has been reduced or eliminated from alkaline batteries there are still components in these single use batteries that make them very undesirable in entering the waste stream. All batteries have 3 things in common: they are non biodegradable, they contain heavy metals and they all contain electrolytes that can contaminate the groundwater. Used batteries are far worse than paper, plastic or glass for the environment, yet people think that since the mercury was eliminated, they are just fine to put into our landfills.
The real reason they are being given the green light to dump is because of cost. Alkaline batteries are relatively expensive to recycle so the blind eye is turned. If it was required to recycle them, as it is in europe, the cost to process would reduce dramatically. Don't buy Eveready and Duracell's line of bs that this stuff is OK to put into our landfills and eventually into our groundwater.

Re: Shippable Recyclables

This is about the most awesome thing I've read all day! Paper and plastic products are not the only things that we can have shredded or recycled these days. There are facilities which recycle old computer parts such as hard drives, even cell phones.

In this way, we no longer have to keep old models of electronic gadgets at home as they only consume space. When we acquire newer models, we should think about how we can dispose of the old models that we have as well.

Re: Electronic Waste – Reduce Reuse Recycle

I love this post, makes such a difference to find ways to reuse or recycle electronics.
So many people I know think they cannot be recycled!
Re: Here Comes Earth Hour 2011

Very good post! I set-up an informal collection schedule for beer bottles with a homeless guy after I noticed him manually picking the bottles from my recycling bin. How can you organize/appeal to people without access to internet? Maybe a text-message based system? I imagine that people with limited or no internet access represent a large proportion of your market for this?

I'll definitely vote for your business, hope to see you as finalists!

Cheers,
-Nik

Re: Texas Bottle Bill

The creators of this bill have not considered the most dangerous aspect of the plastic bottle industry which is the serious adverse affects on our health. The FDA has long been negligent in requiring independent analysis of the water containers. We now know that many of the base chemicals leak into the water and are linked to many health problems including cancer. The bill should have also required that bottle companies provide a safer alternative to petroleum based plastic.

Re: ecycler iPad Giveaway Winner Announced!

Best win ever.

Re: Texas Bottle Bill

Based on the curently proposed $0.10 a typical bag of cans will net $110.00 which would be a good incentive for the teen drivers that are going to need the extra cash to pay $4.00 a gal but the there will need to a bill proposed or something to protect them from being charged with 101 counts of Minor in Posession!!

Re: ecycler and Squidoo

Added squidoo lens #10

Why Recycling is Important: http://www.squidoo.com/recycli...
Re: ecycler and Squidoo

Added #8 and #9:

Are you a Green Traveler: http://www.squidoo.com/travel-...
Sustainable and Sustainability: http://www.squidoo.com/sustain...
Re: ecycler and Squidoo

Good stuff...
